FCAT testing in math, reading and science begins tomorrow
The bulk of FCAT testing begins tomorrow and it's likely students and teachers around the county will be trying to get a good night's rest tonight.
Students in grades three through 10 will take exams in reading and math and students in grades five, eight and 10 also will take the science test. Retakes for 11th and 12th graders also will be given. Testing lasts until March 19.
Students were tested in writing in February.
Also the next round of SAT tests will be held at area high schools March 13. Students will get another opportunity to take the test in May.
The FCAT is the foundation of the statewide educational assessment and accountability programs. Scores are used to create school grades and determine if a school is making Adequate Yearly Progress, as required under the No Child Left Behind law.
FCAT scores can also determine if a third grader will be promoted to the next grade and if a student will be able to graduate with a regular diploma.
Brevard Public Schools often fares well on the exam, when compared with counterparts around the state. Last year students received the best scores among the state’s 10 largest districts in every grade level and subject tested, according to Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test results released Thursday
But two Cocoa schools — Cocoa High and Endeavour Elementary will be the most closely watched this year.
They school both received "D" grades last year because of poor FCAT performance among certain subgroups of students.
Check tomorrow's FLORIDA TODAY for more details.
Also, make sure your child gets a good breakfast. McDonalds is offering free breakfasts, as well as every school in the county if they arrive on campus early enough.

I guess a McDonalds breakfast is better than no breakfast, but their breakfast is more likely to cause someone to be sleepy rather than alert. Kids are better off with a bowl of original oatmeal, not the flavored kind in a package. Add cinnamon and fruit to flavor original oatmeal.
Good luck kids!!
YIIPPPPPEEEE, finally after this week, the kids can actually get a REAL education and not one focused 100% on passing the FCAT....all the teachers can breath a sigh of relief, the children's stomach cramps from stress can go away and maybe some REAL learning can finally occur.
I guess I shouldn't have been yelling at my 3rd grader all night about cleaning his room? It's nice that ONE test can decide if my son should pass 3rd grade... and for that matter whether the school gets adequate funding or not. I thought educators were supposed to be EDUCATED.
FCAT, the stupidest test in the universe. My honor student who is currently a freshman in High School at Viera, has yet to pass the reading portion since 3rd grade. Guess she can't read... well at least the 2 remedial reading classes she takes should definately help her get into a good college.... especially when Florida, ranked at the bottom in education gives us her FCAT scores! Whoopeeeee!!!!!!!
Shameful what politicians will do in the name of "the children." This test has hurt so many kids in so many ways -- especially psychologically. And what can be right about putting a young man or woman out into the world with an empty diploma--- after 13 years of a school career. The cost of that can be mitigated by nothing. Shame on those who perpetuate this insanity!
